Euclid Mathematics Competition


The Euclid Mathematics Contest is a mathematics competition held by the School of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Waterloo for high school students around the world. It is the most valuable and recognized competition in Canadian high schools and is known as the "TOEFL in mathematics." The University of Waterloo has the only mathematics school in Canada and the largest in North America. The Euclid Contest has been held since the 1970s. In the past five years, it has attracted more than 20,000 students to participate each year , and 95% of our students have won awards!


2025 Competition Date

North and South America: April 2, 2025 (Wednesday)
Outside North and South America: Thursday, April 3, 2025

Deadline: March 6, 2025 (Thursday)


Competition Settings

2.5 hours, full mark 100, 10 questions, each question worth 10 marks. Full English paper.

Type of topic:

There are 10 questions in total, including short answer questions and full solution questions. Each question has 2-3 sub-questions.

Test paper composition:

There are two types of questions: short answer questions and full solution questions. Students are required to write out the complete solution process. Points are awarded based on the solution method and steps.

Results Announcement:

Generally in late May, the official organizing committee will announce the score lines and list of winners.

1. Logarithms and Exponents: refers to the solution of logarithms

2. Functions and Equations: How to solve equations

3. Analytic Geometry: Study of angles, similar triangles, etc.

4. Trigonometry: formulas using sin, cos, and tan

5. Sequences and Series: Sequences and series, relatively difficult

6. Circle Geometry: Geometry questions about circles



How to prepare for the Euclid Contest?


★ Be familiar with the scope and question types of the competition

The Euclid competition focuses on advanced high school mathematics knowledge, including:

• Functions and equations

• Plane geometry and trigonometry

• Number sequences and mathematical induction

• Number theory and divisibility

Practice past exam questions to understand question types and difficulty

★ Improve problem-solving skills

Learn to understand questions quickly, practice analyzing key words in questions, and improve calculation accuracy. Learn problem-solving skills and master common methods such as construction method, proof by contradiction, matching method, and algebraic geometry combination.


★ Practice test-taking strategies

The exam time is 2.5 hours. Plan the time for each question in advance and manage your time reasonably. Solve the questions you are good at first to ensure the basic score.
