Toronto City Government Volunteer
"Doors open" Toronto Open Day event invites the public to explore the city's buildings that are not usually open to the public for free . The Open Day series also includes other special programs such as travel tours, lecture series, concerts , etc. For each year's event, volunteers are recruited from all high school students. The recruitment meeting includes rich presentations and short interviews. As the volunteer partner of the city government, Yingshi Education hopes that students will actively participate in high-quality volunteer activities. Yingshi teachers will lead everyone in interviews, training and specific activities!

People can visit buildings that are not open to the public at other times, as well as attractions that usually require tickets. Since its inception in 2000, more than 2 million people have participated in this event and visited nearly 700 unique attractions. As one of the largest such events in Canada, more than 150 buildings and venues open their doors for "Toronto Open Day", making it one of Toronto's most culturally significant celebrations.
Volunteer Positions
Information Ambassadors
Information Ambassadors provide front-line, high-quality customer service to festival-goers. They are friendly ambassadors who keep everyone informed. Primary duties include helping patrons navigate the event, handing out informational materials, answering questions and giving directions. This position is ideal for a friendly person who is a great communicator, has a lot of energy and wants to interact with patrons.
Project Facilitators
Project Coordinators provide unique and varied assistance to event participants (i.e. the public) on how to interact with an art, theater, music, or architecture project. Responsibilities include ensuring participants have the proper tools and information to interact with the project. This position is ideal for a friendly person who wants to engage with participants, as well as gain hands-on experience with a project.
Tour Guides
The tour guide leads groups through the building during Toronto Open Doors events using a (scripted) commentary. Responsibilities include liaising with building staff, understanding scripted facts, and reading all information provided. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys working with large groups and has some tour guiding experience. Experienced volunteers are needed for this position and a resume is required
Volunteer Captains
The Volunteer Captain oversees all volunteer activities at the assigned location. Responsibilities include managing schedules, facilitating assignments, and communicating between volunteers and staff. They ensure volunteers have a positive experience at the Festival. This position is ideally suited for someone with excellent personal and organizational skills, who is highly reliable, dedicated to volunteering, and good at problem solving. This leadership position is only open to those who have volunteered at least two years at City of Toronto cultural events or have demonstrated equivalent experience in other organizations. Experienced volunteers are needed for this position and a resume is required .

Volunteer Recruitment Process
- Register and fill out the volunteer application form
- Attend a recruitment meeting to learn more about the project
- Complete a short interview
Event date and time
1. Held in late May every year, lasting two days
Time Commitment
1. Each volunteer's time commitment is one to two days, four or eight hour shifts
2. Plus a two-hour pre-event training session
As an active Open Day volunteer you will:
1. Receive regular updates on city government activities
2. You will receive a letter of commendation and a certificate of hours worked after each holiday
3. Eligible for Volunteer Recognition Award
In the past, Yingshi students who participated in the municipal government’s job fair achieved 100% admission after receiving pre-interview training from teachers!
