02 What is the format of the Wharton Business Competition?
The Wharton Global High School Investment Competition is a free online investment simulation for high school students (grades 9-12) and teachers. Students work in teams of 4-7 with teachers as their advisors. Together, they learn about teamwork, communication, risk, diversification, company and industry analysis, and many other important aspects of investing.
Target group: High school students aged 14-18 who have not graduated before September 25, 2023.
Team composition: The entire team consists of mentors, team leaders, and members; mentors lead students to learn business and financial knowledge and become familiar with competition rules; team leaders are the only ones who have access to the OTIS virtual trading system; each team member (including team leaders) is responsible for a section.
Each team of students can buy and sell stocks, develop investment strategies, analyze industries and companies, and build a portfolio using $100,000 in virtual cash over a 10-week period, investing on a simulated platform. All trades are conducted on WInS (Wharton Investment Simulator). WInS is a web-based stock market simulation that allows students to apply concepts of investing and portfolio management in a hands-on learning environment while using real-world data without risking real money.
