Chess in the Library: Who We Are

Library Chess is a student-run organization whose mission is to provide free chess to everyone. We host tournaments every year and have programs every week throughout the year. We are based in Canada, with most of our projects taking place in the Greater Toronto Area. For more information about our organization and who we are, please visit chessinthebrary.com. We are looking for volunteers to help us run our chess program. If you are a high school student looking for an opportunity to gain leadership experience by running a nonprofit, this opportunity is for you.

 

Please note that this is a face-to-face, permanent position and you must commit for at least one year.

(2nd & 4th Sunday of every month, 1:30 PM - 3:30 PM) [spots also open for teen/adult program, 3:30 PM - 4:30 PM] [looking for 17+ volunteers]

Dufferin Clark Library

(every Tuesday, 6:30 PM - 8 PM)

VMC Library

(2nd Thursday of every month, 6:30 PM - 8 PM)

Richmond Green Library

(every Tuesday, 4:30 PM - 5:30 PM in February)

Volunteer Responsibilities

Volunteer responsibilities

Responsibilities:

- Supervise participants in the program

- Promote chess games and events

- Teach beginners the basics of chess

- Set up and take down the board and chess set before and after each game

Require:

-Must be able to engage in volunteer service for a long time

- Must be proficient in chess (i.e. basic knowledge of chess, value of chess pieces, strategies, etc.)

-Must be patient and able to handle children

-Recommended teaching and supervisory skills

-Police Vulnerable Unit Inspection prior to volunteering start date (does not apply to Vaughan Public Library)

2. Attend recruitment fairs to learn more about the project

3. Complete a short interview

*Friends who participate in volunteering can obtain a volunteer certificate.
